Dominant Uni put fifteen past Mid Annandale

University of Stirling FC 15–1 Mid Annandale AFC

South Challenge Cup, Saturday 13 September 2025

Six goals from striker Thomas Vonk capped a dominant attacking performance as the University of Stirling put fifteen goals past visiting Mid Annandale AFC in the South Challenge Cup last Saturday.

It took just seven minutes for the Students to break the deadlock, with attacker Finn Regan stroking the ball home after some sustained early pressure.

Sam Martin followed that up with a deft chip, lifting the ball over the advancing Mid Annandale keeper on the 19-minute mark after a tasty through-ball.

The Uni spurned several glorious chances in the first half, but defender Calan Ledingham removed any hope the visiting Mids side may have had, sneaking in at the back post and sending the ball goalwards with a tidy diving header to give the Uni a 3-0 lead at half-time.

Dutchman Thomas Vonk came on after the break – replacing Finn Regan – and it took the big striker less than a minute to make his mark, ghosting in at the back post to convert a great cross from strike partner Nathan Tallen.

Dutch courage – Mid Annandale couldn’t cope with Dutchman Vonk

The Mid Annandale legs began to falter, and try as they might, the men from Lockerbie couldn’t do anything in the face of a vulgar display of power from the Students and an inspired Vonk.

Vonk added four more in a devastating 15-minute salvo, including a glorious overhead kick, before completing his double hat trick in the 73rd minute.

That feat was complemented by goals from Carter Jenkins, Jay Burns, Dylan Brown, Ledingham’s second of the afternoon and a quickfire brace from Finn Moffett.

Stirling keeper Alex Sutherland had a quiet afternoon but was ultimately powerless to prevent Mid Annandale’s solitary goal, coming from a counter attack which was turned in at the near post by the visitors’ Monteith – ironically a former University of Stirling club man.

A confidence-boosting win which will be a welcome sight for head coach Chris Geddes ahead of the University’s next match at home Albion Rovers on Saturday 20 September.

University of Stirling FC Head Coach Chris Geddes said:

“It was a professional performance from the boys, so I’m happy.

“It’s always a boost to score goals so it’s good as well from that perspective.

“The only disappointment from our side really is that we lost James Malcolm to injury in the first half. He’s a key player for us so naturally we’re disappointed.”
