Cowdenbeath 2
University of Stirling 1
The University of Stirling have suffered another defeat on the road after struggling to create chances against Cowdenbeath, who sit once place above the students in the league.
Quality was lacking from both sides in the opening minutes, but it was Cowdenbeath who edged out as they got the scoring underway in the 15th minute.
With a free kick at the edge of the box the home side managed to send the ball into the back of the net.
It only took nine minutes for the uni to get the equaliser as Isa Aslanoglu managed to get a powerful header away after receiving the ball from a corner, as the university were given a lifeline.
The keepers were kept busy at both ends as it was end-to-end football, but neither team could create any real threat.
Heading into the second half and the defence on both teams were called into action for multiple set pieces at each end.
However, Cowdenbeath managed to restore their lead a few minutes before the hour mark.
The rest of the game remained much the same as chances were few and far between for both sides.
Cowdenbeath managed to hold on to full-time to collect all three points.
University of Stirling head coach, Chris Geddes, said after the match: “It was tough conditions for both of the teams due to the heavy pitch.
“We lost a goal from a free kick after an even start but then responded with a good header from Isa to make it 1-1 before half time.
“In the second half Cowdenbeath came out stronger and scored another.
“We had chances to equalise, but we couldn’t get the goal.
“A draw was probably a fair result but it’s fair play to Cowdenbeath, they got the second and we couldn’t.”
University of Stirling FC are on the road again for their next fixture as they face Broomhill on Saturday 25 January.
