Cumbernauld Colts 0 – 1 University of Stirling

The University of Stirling rose to seventh in the Lowland League with a 1-0 away win against Cumbernauld Colts on Saturday.

A strike from forward Finn Moffett – who has been in fine form this season – was the difference between the two sides at Broadwood Stadium. He struck on 29 minutes, slotting home after excellent skill from midfielder Jack Hodge to set him up.

University of Stirling Head Coach Chris Geddes said: “It was a really good win – an away win with a clean sheet – and that’s always a good feeling. We put in a good performance, Finn got another goal in the league and Adam (Buttigieg, goalkeeper) made some really good saves today as well – so we’re really pleased.”

The victory sees the students go into their Scottish Cup encounter against top-of-the-league Caledonian Braves this weekend with confidence. The first-round tie will take place on Saturday afternoon – just weeks after the two sides played out a five-goal thriller in the league, which saw Braves edge the University 3-2.

Geddes added: “The Scottish Cup is always exciting and the boys are looking forward to it.

“It’s going to be really tough – Caledonian Braves are top of the Lowland League having had a really good season so far. But we are confident that we can do something against them as well. We will have a good week of training and are looking forward to Saturday.”

The Scottish Cup match takes place at Forthbank Stadium at 3pm on Saturday 28 September. Tickets – priced at £8 for adults and £4 for students/concessions – are available to buy on the gate.

University of Stirling: Buttigieg, Jeanes, Service, Aslanoglu, Heal, Hodge, Martin (McCafferty, 65), Walker, Moffett (Laird, 78), Vonk (Tallen, 65), Burns (Trotter, 88).
