Berwick Rangers 0-7 University of Stirling FC
The University of Stirling has bounced back from defeat in the cup to secure a huge 7-0 win over Berwick Rangers in the league, taking all three points back across the border.
Jack Hodge opened the scoring after 10 minutes, as Berwick Rangers struggled to clear the ball from a Stirling corner, finding the feet of Hodge who powered it into the back of the net.
The second goal was scored from the same style of play on the 24th minute mark, this time by Jay Burns, as he blasted the ball into the top left corner of the net from outside the box, after Berwick Rangers struggled to get the ball clear.
Some excellent link-up play secured the third at 37 minutes, as a brilliant pass into the box allowed Finn Moffett to calmly slide the ball into the back of the net.
The Uni weren’t done yet however, as the fourth came minutes before half time. A cross into the box saw the keeper get a big hand to the ball however it fell at the feet of Hodge, who fired it into the net, claiming his second of the game.
Some subs from Berwick Rangers at half time looked to get them back in the game, however the Uni were adding to the goal tally 15 minutes into the second half, as Burns got his second of the evening, putting the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Moments later Moffett secured a second, as the ball was played down the left wing and middled to Moffett who, with an excellent first touch inside the box, got the shot away, rocketing it past the keeper.
20 minutes later, the game was ending, but the Uni got the seventh, with Captain, Ben Heal, pressing the opposition and winning the ball back before making a break at goal and trying to find the back of the net from a tight angle. The ball rolled in at the near post after the shot took a deflection.
Speaking on the victory, University of Stirling Head Coach Chris Geddes said: “I’m obviously delighted with the result considering the couple of defeats we were coming off the back of.
“We decided to rest some boys on Saturday in the cup game and we obviously lost the cup game, but the players were really fresh and fit and there was loads of energy.
“It could have been more than seven, but we were really clinical, took our chances when they came and not many teams go down to Berwick and take many goals off them.
“For us to take seven off them and keep a clean sheet, everyone is really happy with that.
“They’ve started the season really well and we knew it would be a tough game but the fresh legs and the energy we had; they couldn’t handle us.
“No injuries, no suspensions for the weekend so we go into Sunday with a really tough game against Hearts, but we’ve got a good few days rest now and we’ll see how we get on.
“Overall, I’m really impressed with the result but it’s only one game, we’ve got lots more to play so we’re done for today and we’re moving on to the next one.”
University of Stirling take on Hearts U-21s at home in the Lowland League this Sunday (25 August).
