Eight goal thriller sees Uni exit Cup

Glasgow United 5-3 University of Stirling, South Challenge Cup

By Anya Diggines

The University of Stirling have exited from the South Challenge Cup after being defeated by Glasgow United in an eight-goal thriller.

The students – playing away from home – were 3-0 down by the 25th minute but managed to pull one back through Abel Manomey in injury time before the break.

The comeback gained more momentum as the team came out in the second half and Manomey grabbed his second of the afternoon – making it 3-2 just before the hour mark. However, five minutes later Glasgow scored their fourth.

Hopes were high again after substitute Rain McLean fired one in the back of the net, but Glasgow secured the victory after getting their fifth in the closing moments of the game.

Speaking on the loss, University of Stirling Head Coach Chris Geddes said: “It is disappointing to go out of the cup, but we didn’t play well enough to go through and Glasgow United deserved it.

“We rotated the squad for the game and others got a game, plus we brought in players from the under 20s, but we didn’t give ourselves a chance in the game losing sloppy goals and not causing them any trouble until we were 3-0 down.

“The second half was a lot better, and we dominated but we didn’t trouble their goalkeeper too much for all the possession we had.

“We have a chance to bounce back right away with a game on Tuesday night so we will plan for that now.

“We have a new group of players, so we need to keep working to get better.”

The University travel to Berwick Rangers for midweek action in the league [Tuesday 20th August].
