Red card thwarts Uni’s chances against BSC

BSC Glasgow 3 – 0 University of Stirling
Lowland League, Saturday 28 September

Stirling University manager Chris Geddes believes a controversial red card “killed” his side’s chances against BSC Glasgow at the weekend.

The students suffered a 3-0 defeat after defender Alex Webb received a straight red card on 62 minutes in Saturday’s Lowland League match.

Speaking after the game, Geddes said: “We have no arguments about the final score – but, for me, the red card killed the game. We were well in the match – even at one nil down – but it was difficult playing against a top team with only 10 men.

“We now turn our attentions to Tuesday night’s home match against Kelty Hearts.”

Red: Alex Webb was controversially sent off early in the second half.

BSC started the game well and had two early chances that were both well saved by Kevin Walker in the Stirling goal.

Both sides saw their share of the action as the half progressed, with good play from Stirling and BSC resulting in opportunities in dangerous areas – but the scoreline was goalless at half-time.

The second half began at a fast pace and BSC opened the scoring on 47 minutes when a free kick from 25 yards was deflected low past helpless Walker.

Just five minutes later, the BSC goalkeeper Ryan Marshall pulled off an impressive double save to prevent the equaliser – first from a James Berry free kick and then from Ben Quigley’s follow-up shot.

Moments later Webb saw red for a pull back on Martin Grehan, which the referee saw as a clear goalscoring opportunity – a decision that the Stirling management team felt was harsh.

Stirling struggled to compete with just 10 men and BSC scored again on 74 minutes, with Grehan tapping in a Tom Orr cross at the back post, before rounding off the scoring with a Thomas Collins header in the 90th minute.
